The background for the project

In August 2005, our Orchestra comes to Norway, Sweden, and Finland with a concert tour. Our Orchestra has already established cultural relations with several Universities and Choirs in Scandinavia.

The history of the relations between our Orchestra and Scandinavian colleagues counts the following important milestones. In May 2003, two Swedish Choirs ("Arctic Voices" and "Aurora") were invited to Saint-Petersburg by our University. In October 2003, our Orchestra visited Lulea, Boden, and Pitea (Sweden). In June 2004, the Vesteralen Choir (Norway) visited Saint-Petersburg and Gatchina. Later in 2004, a contact with the University of Joensuu (Finland) had been established. In May 2005, our Swedish colleagues came again to Saint-Petersburg with a new programme.

During each of these tours we had concerts with a combined musical programme. We showed places of interest in our city to our colleagues, and got pleasure of getting familiar with Scandinavian culture. Together, we enjoyed of comparing our cultures to enrich both.

We have a tradition of living in families of our colleagues during tours, to make our contact closer.

We suggest a unique cultural exchange and convergence. We hope that people in all mentioned countries, who come to our concerts, will enjoy our music.

Most musicians are amateurs. But playing or singing is a very important activity for everyone. As three Universities are involved (Lulea University of Technology, Saint-Petersburg State University, and University of Joensuu), there are many young people and students who take part in the project. However, there are people of different ages.

This project is supported by the Nordic Culture Fund:

The purpose and long-term goal of the Project

The main goal of this Project is a cultural exchange between the following Scandinavian organizations and the Russian Folk Orchestra of Saint-Petersburg University:

  • Choir "Arctic Voices" (Sweden)
  • Vesteralen Choir (Norway)
  • University of Joensuu (Finland)

Different people come to our concerts to learn a different musical experience. Too little is known about Russian Folk music in Scandinavia, and vice versa, about Scandinavian music in Russia. Our efforts are to fulfil this gap.

With this Project, Scandinavian music will be communicated to a Russian audience, and Russian music will be communicated to audience in Norway, Sweden, and Finland.

Our repertoire includes folk music, contemporary classical adaptations, modern compositions, including pieces written or adapted by our musicians. This year we prepare adaptation of the Piano concerto a-moll and vocal works by E. Grieg.
